Becoming a Better Leader – Tip 7

Tip 7: Deal with Resistive Personalities & Poor Performance

If you don’t deal with poor performance, it will continue!  Worse yet, other team members will stop using the skills they have and will stop being creative.  Sometimes it is easy to think that challenging behaviour will fix itself.  We don’t want to deal with the disharmony or the conflict.  However, your team is looking for you to lead it.  Find out what happened, why it happened and make it right.  Give guidance, be flexible and be the leader!

  •  Avoid blaming and punishing and aim to improve the situation.  If something isn’t working, try something else.
  • We all know what conflict looks like and if we are on the lookout, we can see conflict brewing well before it reaches a crisis stage.  Listen to the person, attend to them, identify emotional content, identify the person’s view point and always separate the issue from the person!
